Hi. I came across your novel “The Gathering Dead” and what a wild ride. I do have to say, I got the distinct impression of a racist bent. I know the main character is black, but lines like this:
… Hassle looked past McDaniels, where Coast Guardsmen were tending to Regina, Earl and Zoe. “I don’t suppose that black man is…?”
“That black man” was the only man there. Regina and Zoe are female. The Coast Guardsmen, Hassle would obviously know already. Why the hell would he have to ask if “the Black man” is the guy? As opposed to… what? No one ever asks, if “that white man there, is he…” or no description says, “the white man jumped…” just always “the black man”.
It’s disappointing… I know this is an early book of yours and I hope you’ve found new insights into your own racism. Best of luck.

A simply extraordinary claim, especially when your cited evidence is from a novel of the zombie apocalypse…a total work of fiction.

I’d like you to say these things to my face. Are you in the New York City area? We could meet at the Starbucks at 55 Liberty Street. If not, I can arrange transportation to facilitate such a noble discussion. I’m quite certain you won’t have the moral courage to accept such an offer, but there it is, Mr. Merritt.

Traveling to NYC is pointless. However, as I said on the other forum, it is not for me to assign my opinions of what I read in your novel to you as a person, and I apologize for those aspersions.
