THE LAST TOWN #4: FIGHTING THE DEAD Cover

Going about it differently this time, got the cover pulled together before the story. Ladies and germs: Danielle Kennedy, one-legged Marine and Iron Chef, going to guns on the stenches. Still slated for an August release, though.🙂

Wow… cool cover! If you intend to incorporate this front cover artwork into the storyline you should be aware there are very few AR-15 style rifle/carbines that have a folding stock. This is due to the AR-15’s DI (Direct Impingement) gas operating system which utilizes a buffer tube and recoil spring directly aft and inline with the bolt carrier. With this kind of system a “folding stock” is not possible. However, if you really want to go with Danielle using a folding stock type AR-15, one such rifle is the Para USA TTR (no longer in production) which changed the operating system from DI to DIGS (Delayed Impingement Gas System) which eliminates the buffer tube and can utilize a folding stock. Also, keep in mind that as shown, Danielle’s weapon is a SBR (Short Barreled Rifle). Such a firearm is definitely illegal under Federal firearms laws unless you have an ATF approved TAX STAMP. Of course, in a zompoc who cares about that.

Of course, if this is just artwork and that’s all it’s intended to be… well, there you have it… nice job! :o)

It was an image that could be had relatively inexpensively, versus say, $1,550 for the custom cover for Immolation.

Makes sense! So I won’t expect to see Danielle running and gunning with an unusual weapon configuration in TLT4. Regardless, it still looks good.

    Steve
Like the series very much but have you ever seen or heard of the coast guard fighting the.dead in ANY zombie book? I’m a cop here in Charlotte NC and former USCG. I know I would head to the coast and find a nice island. PSU 307 can hold and defend any port in the world!

Yes–in THE GATHERING DEAD, the WMEC Escanaba does just that.

I read it on your advice. I am disappointed with they say your story line reflects the coast guard. LEDAT is not the same as TACLET. I assure you that the coastie’s are far more effective fighting force then how they are portrayed in your book. TACLET which would be on a 270 cutter would be far more likely engage with the same ferocity as your SF characters. I have understood that most Americans have no clue what the coast guard does. That’s why they refer to them as Uncle Sam’s confused group.USCG. Semper Peratus

Sorry guy, had a crewman who served on the Nob in the late 1980s advising me. I’ve known him for decades, and he wouldn’t steer me wrong.

I was on the Manitou, 110′ fast cutter in late 90’s. During the drug wars this was built to be fast and armored up, I am a little more up to date then your buddy. I find the puddle pirates, 6 ft sailor jokes to be old. The best movie we have is The Guardian! Kevin Costner is not a Clint Eastwood. We have always been portrayed as the weakest military in our country. The NYPD police dept has more officers then the entire Coast Guard. We are also the second hardest boot camp behind the Marine Corps. We have always been trained to adapt and change. The leadership is essentially left up to the enlisted, simply because there aren’t that many officers. My point being is that your buddy’s outdated information has painted the coast guard to look like cowards in your book. I would only ask you to consider that they are trained not just in SAR, LE, but also to seize and hold ports, and yes even combat.
Steve get that you were painting a picture of what to be expected from the Coast Guard. I would ask that you simply consider that out of all the armed forces which one is the lesser known?
Consider that ALL armed forces do have a specialized unit within. The special operations group could sight them for you. Marines-recon, Navy-Seals, Air Forces-PJ’s, Army-Delta/SF……Coast Guard..? Perhaps there is a reason for the silence.. Out of all them coast guard has the most authority in all waters acting under the presidential flag.

I like your books. I am a fan. I just wish it was accurate. Douglas Monroe was our only medal of honor hero. As they say though, If we gave medals to every guardian who did something brave they would all walk around looking like Russian generals!

        Thanks Steve!

Maybe some redemption for the old guard could be forthcoming in your next book!

The only thing Hassle did was not send his Coasties back into NYC to retrieve Gartrell, and they didn’t even know where he was. And would YOU go up against 50,000 stenches standing at the waterline? No CO worth his salt would throw away his men like that.

And besides…this is fiction. I wouldn’t feel too banged up over it. It’s not a textbook or a historical perspective of any kind.

But if the opportunity presents itself, I’ll take another swing at it.

Joe’s doing some body and fender work on it, and tells us it’ll be done in the next couple of days. We already have cover designing underway, so I hope he’s right!

Sorry, Charges has been prioritizing my time for the moment. Had to roll off TLT4 to try and square the bigger book away before its release.
