Ch-Ch-Changes…

Heh, not only was David Bowie’s everlasting song Changes the theme of my high school graduation class, it lends itself as a title to this quick snippet of a blog post.

Things have been wild and wooly at Casa Knight as of late, but since it’s the stories that you’re interested in, that’s what we’ll cover. Charges has moved out of novella territory and is a full-on novel, so that’s been bumped back in the schedule a bit as I rework some scenes to take into account the change in scope. Out soon instead will be an Earthfall novella, titled The Last Run, which features a day in the life of Harmony Base before the Sixty Minute War caused mushroom clouds to sprout across the globe and generally derail Scott Mulligan’s Friday afternoon. Cover was commissioned and delivered by the forthright Jeroen ten Berge, and I feature it here:

The Immolation series is slowly moving ahead, and the scope has changed quite a bit there, as well. Working with Scott Wolf has been a kick in the ass, as that real-life Green Beret is all into Mind-Mapping the zombie apocalypse and the Continuity of Government (COG, if you must know the acronym) initiatives that would follow. My instinct with this series was to make it more “military lite” than The Gathering Dead series, but MSG Wolf’s practical, real-world experiences traipsing through the world’s garden spots while on active duty have directly informed the storyline to march in a different direction. As such, you can now expect multi-pronged assaults on the dead as well as experience the thrills and spills of a mish-mash of military and civilian characters try to execute their missions, and not get wiped out at the same time. This promises to be an ambitious project, and at the moment, it will span at least five books. I’m not sure what the output will be, but I would say that two books a year would be doable.

The rather unremarkably titled Earthfall 2 is on the rack as well, and I’m massaging that into shape while all of this is going on. Andrews, Mulligan, Leona, Laird, and the rest of the SCEV 4 and 5 crews team up once again, this time on a tandem mission to the Oregon coast.

The prequel to The Gathering Dead lurks in my mind and on my SSD as an outline, but the chances of that making an appearance in 2013 is desultory, at best. (If I didn’t have a fulltime job, that would be a different story.) But fans of Gartrell and McDaniels, take heart–it is “in process,” as they say. Also in the distant wings, a sequel to The Rising Horde, but as of yet, I have only a beginning and an ending–and this time, the ending will be much less of a downer. (Addendum: the audio book edition of The Gathering Dead should be out within mere days!)

Last bit of business: I can’t speak in detail due to the fact that the operating agreements have not been completed, but look for a set of six or so literary works from Your Man Knight and two other classified but high-profile individuals. Special Operations Writer #1 will have the lead-in completed in August or September, my contribution will debut in November, and Special Operations Writer #2 will deliver the last edition of the first trilogy in the early months of 2014. This one’s going to be a big one, folks, so stay tuned. As soon as I can announce it, I’ll try and post some chapters. This one’ll blow your hair back, I guarantee.

Ah, and before I forget: German readers, I’m close to releasing the translated version of The Gathering Dead for your enjoyment.

Now, if you’ll excuse me–Mulligan has to face down a nuclear explosion.

Really looking forward to THE IMMOLATION series – is there an ETA for Book 1?

Not yet, though it will be before the end of the year. I’ve been sandbagged by a million other things, and the delays are mostly my fault, at this point.

Sounds like a bunch of auto-buys! eBook and physical formats?

Ebooks all across the board, but probably only novels in print. That’s subject to change, however.

Mr. Knight, I’m a huge fan of the Gathering Dead series and especially appreciate the detailed descriptions of military ops. Please keep McDaniels and Gartrell stories coming. I feel like I know them that’s how well you developed them. As a female reader I just love those hardcore military heroes and could only wish they were real life. I’m a German native, so if you ever need a German word or phrase here or there I would be very happy to provide the proper spelling and context.
